Timas Harik Wins Again

Timas Harik, Victoria Athletics and Australian middle distance running champion, has once again taken the honours, winning the inaugural Sport Australia Hall of Fame / Sports Without Borders scholarship 2011.

In a presentation at St Kevin’s College, Toorak, on Monday March 7th, Timas received his award in front of a distinguished crowd of past sports superstars including his mentor, ex AFL player and coach David Parkin, Captain of K2 and architect of Australia’s famous America’s Cup win, John Bertrand and Olympic Gold medallist Rowing Champion from the Oarsome Foursome, Mike McKay.

Originally from Sudan, Timas arrived in Australia as an 11 year old after having spent a number of months in a Cairo refugee camp. He is currently a Year 11 student at St. Kevin’s College in Toorak.  Coach Peter Kehoe tells us Timas has a relaxed, easy going personality while St Kevin’s Sports Master, Luke Travers reveals that Timas is a likeable student coping ok at school, given his background and circumstances.

Timas has won a number of underage All-schools and Australian titles. He is the current U/17 Australian 800m & 1500m Junior Champion, U/18 Australian All-Schools 800m Champion and U/18 Victorian 800 & 1500m Champion and currently preparing for the Australian Juniors Championships in Sydney in mid-March.  From this meet, he hopes to gain selection in the Australian Youth team for the World Youth Championships in Lille France in July.
